Today I’m pleased to introduce Janet Hamilton of Ready 2 Run Educational Resources, which is a new online business. Janet is lucky to live on the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Australia. She has a B.A. Dip Ed (Bachelor of Arts, Diploma of Education) and worked for Education Queensland for 25 years, running workshops and teaching to develop and source resources – and is now sharing that wonderful knowledge and experience through her own business.
Janet has a grown son, and I liked her answer to my interview question (which maybe is rude for me to be asking everyone anyway!) how old are you? “I’m mature when I’m in a professional mode and very young when I have little people around me.”
Compared to life “after children”?
… you are always a parent regardless of your children’s age! I love meeting up with my son for coffee, lunch or dinner and spending time together. I really like his partner. She is so much fun to be around.
Approximately how many hours a week do you work?
What is one of your own favourite services?
Unexpected things about becoming a parent?
You learn so much about yourself, the capacity to love, the need for love, empathy, peace and tolerance.
Something unexpected about starting a business?
How long it can take to get off the ground.
One of your greatest wishes for your child… & business?
To share the gifts that you have with those who need it most.
Something you’re proud of?
A recent challenge?
Finding out how hard it is to be a sole trader.
Advice to others starting out in business?
Spend time on marketing, blogging and building a reputation before starting up your biz.
A favourite resource?
Your eBook concisely lists the major points of several informational books I’ve purchased over the last 6 months.
What kind of work does your partner do?
Is your partner and family supportive of your business?
My son is frequently called on for help. He is my guru! My partner has a good eye for detail.
Describe your office:
Too small but looks out onto a magnificent view. Get to watch all types of birds without their knowing. The weather dictates how long I sit without a break. Often the need to get ‘dirt’ on my hands or play with my pooch entices me outdoors. I love my large whiteboard!
What’s a typical day like for you?
Yes I love my routines, but I also love doing something entirely different. I’m at my computer early. But most days I begin my day with a walk & talk with a friend followed by mindful meditation, then into my ‘office’.
What do you love about being in business?
Flexibility. Not into television, so feel very good about working in the evenings. Love being my own boss though do miss moderating ideas etc.
What do you think is a myth about being in business?
Not everybody is going to succeed early in their career even if they follow every great biz strategy. There are so many economic, social and political trends impacting on small businesses.
Tip for family work balance?
when you love doing what you do it is easy to rationalize the time you put into it…but you need to balance this with other loves…your social, emotion and cognitive needs must be met to be the best you can be in all areas of your life.
A huge thank you to Janet for taking part. Look out for posts on the benefits of knowing how the young brain develops and other useful information on the Ready To Run Resources Facebook page.
